< PreviousKiwiFlyer Magazine Issue 69 40 Winter is a great time to try flying a glider. You could be solo by spring and learning cross-country skills in summer. Jill McCaw recounts her own path in aviation, beginning with the ridge at Drury behind the Auckland Gliding Club. Hooray for winter flying Normally winter is a quiet season in the gliding world. The clubs’ mid-winter dinners and spot landing competitions are important dates on the calendar as usually club members don’t go flying and don’t see much of each other. This year is different. It’s a phenomenon that is being seen in the aero clubs as well; after the restrictions of lock down, all the aviators Take up gliding now and you could be ready for cross country soaring by summer. New Zealand Soaring contributed by Jill McCaw in the country are flying their pants off, making up for lost air time. Many of New Zealand’s gliding clubs have into-wind ridges within easy distance of the strip, allowing soaring flights all year round. Some, like the Canterbury Gliding Club, based at Springfield, just under Porters Pass, can jump from the ridge into the higher country and have some incredible Contact Martin Henton 0273 324 415 martin@andersonaviation.co.nz Facebook: Bristell Aircraft NZ www.andersonaviation.co.nz New Bristell B8 High Wing Anderson Aviation is proud to introduce the41 2020 #3 scenic flights over the snow-capped ranges of the foothills of the Southern Alps. Pilots from Piako, based near Matamata and Tauranga can hop onto the Kaimais and enjoy long ridge runs and hours of flying in these colder days. Even the little ridge at Drury behind the Auckland Gliding Club, allows for training flights and occasional jumps into thermals. More than thirty years ago, on a quiet, slightly westerly winter’s day, a work colleague introduced me to gliding on that ridge. He blew me away with the idea that we could have stayed, just above the tree tops, looking down on the world, for as long as we wanted to. Unfortunately, we weren’t actually allowed to keep doing that as other people were waiting for their turn with the glider and after around 40 minutes in the air, we were back on the ground. A couple of weeks later I had a second flight and the next thing I knew I was a club member, had a logbook and had begun my training. It was intense, and so exciting. The club flew weekends and I think, Thursdays. I was doing my nursing training and working shifts and I’d shoot out to the club after a morning shift or fit in some circuit training before starting an afternoon shift at 2pm. My nursing lecture notes had illustrations of gliders, winch launches, cumulous clouds (I got quite good at drawing clouds) and little tow planes. I really enjoyed gliding but had no idea that I’d stumbled into something that would change the direction of my life. Gliding people are a big part of that. They’re good people. People with a passion for aviation usually are. When I did my OE a few years later, as well as the usual slightly dodgy double deck bus tour of Europe I visited gliding fields, was hosted by glider pilots and families, flew in England, Ireland, the Austrian Alps and attended a World Gliding Champs in Australia. Some of the friends I made in those places are friends still. Back in New Zealand I married a glider pilot and went on to produce two fantastic sons, one of whom is a glider pilot too. You’ve heard all about him in other columns I’ve written. And then about 13 years ago, in another one of those serendipitous events, a conversation around the campfire at the Omarama airfield led to the formation of SoaringNZ, a new look glossy magazine for Gliding New Zealand – with me at the helm. SoaringNZ has been a labour of love for twelve years. I am so F K damn proud of that magazine. We ran local stories of all events gliding but also included the best and most interesting and exciting stories from overseas. It looked damn good too, with photos provided by my husband John and others and a superb layout that showed it all off to perfection. SoaringNZ opened doorways into other areas of publication – Kiwi Flyer for example and the idea of writing books about interesting aviation people. Sadly, SoaringNZ is no more. Issue number 61 has just come out and it is the last. It just isn’t economic to keep producing it and I’ll be moving on to other things. However, in no way is my connection to gliding over and you needn’t worry, my relationship with this magazine will continue. I’ll still be writing these columns for KiwiFlyer and encouraging all you power pilots to give the joys of engineless flight a go. The cool stable days that we get at this time of year are perfect for learning to fly gliders. Why don’t you give it a go? You could be solo by spring and ready to learn how to soar cross-country when the thermals kick in this summer. And if you’re lucky, you can spend hours soaring a ridge, simply amazed that you’re airborne with no engine. For information on your local gliding club see the Gliding New Zealand website. He says that from all reports it was a quality all-metal complete kit with no jigs required, had removable wings for easy transport and has quite a class of followers - although it was quite expensive. It also has two seats and a glass cockpit and an autopilot – a feature which David liked. Produced by Van’s Aircraft of Aurora, Oregon, the RV-12 is powered with a Rotax 912 and cruises at around 105 kts. David has registered his new plane ZK- SCM, the S being for his wife Susan and his son Scott’s initials. Scott also has his PPL so will be keen to fly the RV-12. David started building the RV-12 five years ago as a hobby build, enjoying the journey along the way. Now that it is getting close to been finished David says his favourite part of the build was the wings and the wiring - and particularly the latter stages of the project as all the components have been coming together for the final time. All that is left to do now is have the fuselage painted, David’s plan being for a colour scheme similar to the Corby Starlet’s yellow, red and white that he is often seen in the cockpit of. ZK-TOT & ZK-TPT Tecnam P2008 JC Two brand new Tecnam P2008 JC aircraft have recently been added to New Zealand Airline Academy Limited’s fleet. This is the very latest iteration of the P2008 line and the first to arrive in Australasia. Incorporated in 2018, the Oamaru based New Zealand Airline Academy was in 2019 selected as a training partner of Air Asia India’s first ever cadet pilot programme, providing a significant boost to the local Waitaki economy. They currently have 78 international students who will complete a one-year programme before returning to their homelands. Of these 78 students, 22 were guaranteed employment with Air Asia India. The Academy’s Director, Jonathan Jeyamonhan, says that their new Tecnams are perfectly suited as a training aircraft for the airline industry due to having advanced glass cockpit systems (dual GDU 460 with EIS), being very fuel efficient, easy to maintain, EASA approved, and because the students love to fly them. Rotax 912 powered, the new P2008s offer a cruise speed of 120 kts and a cross country range of around 700 nm. ZK-LLX Milholland Legal Eagle XL Terry Smith from Te Awanga has constructed his Legal Eagle aeroplane from scratch “for a hobby” over a period of six years as time and money allowed. The aeroplane was designed to the American Pt 103 rule by a Mr L Milholland of Texas USA, with construction being of 4130 steel for the fuselage, with spruce wood spars and built up ribs, and the movable tail sections from riveted aluminium. The seat is from aluminium strips woven and riveted together and Terry declares it very comfortable to sit in. Thanks to that seat, Terry’s wife Molly calls it a deck chair with wings attached. Joking aside, Terry says she has been very encouraging and patient during the build for which he is very thankful. Only the wing and tail surfaces are fabric covered. The fuselage remains naked although some builders in the States have chosen to cover their aircraft. Terry’s Legal Eagle is powered by a 50 hp VW conversion which should give it a cruise speed of about 60 mph. (The designed states Vne as 80 mph.) Fuel capacity is 5 US gallons or about 1.25 hours of flight time. The plane was suitably prepared and loaded into a container which left the States in late October 2019 and arrived in Napier at the end of January 2020. Then it went to Flight Care Ltd in Napier to be re- assembled where at time of writing its CAA inspection is imminent. The Rallye was originally developed during the 1950s by French aircraft manufacturer Morane-Saulnier. Its cantilever wing incorporates interconnected full-span automatic leading-edge slats, wide-chord slotted ailerons, and wide-span Fowler-type trailing edge flaps. The combination of full-span slats and large Fowler flaps provides the plane with very capable slow- speed performance. The Rallye 235 variant was furnished with a Lycoming O-540 engine providing a maximum of 235 hp (hence the name) and cruises at around 130 kts. ZK-FIT (from Hugo’s surname) was restored and updated while it was still in the States so is a very tidy example. Hugo is looking forward to flying his new plane from his base in Hawkes’ Bay down to his farm in North Canterbury.Kiwi F lyer Advertising Index page AeroFix . . . . . . . 8 Alpi Aviation . . . . . . 25 Anderson Aviation . . . . . 40 Ardmore Aviation Technical . . . 19 Ardmore Flying School . . . . 19 Ardmore Sky Station . . . . 44 Avclean . . . . . . . 3 Avcraft Avionics . . . . . 18 Avcraft Engineering . . . . 35 Aviation & Performance Parts . . 33 Aviation Power Supply Pty . . . 6 Aviation Safety Supplies . . . 10 Aviation Tours NZ . . . . . 9 Avionics Canterbury Wide . . . 27 Avplan EFB . . . . . . 16 Avsure . . . . . . . 21 Barfoot and Thompson . . . . 14 CAA NSS . . . . . . 38 Canterbury Aicraft Maintenance . 26 Central Aero Electrical . . . . 36 Central Aero Engineering . . . 13 Composites International . . . 36 Dennis Thompson International . 45, 46 Ensol . . . . . . . 41 EuroFox DTI . . . . . . 23 Fieldair Engineering . . . . 42 Flying NZ . . . . . . 44 Foxbat NZ . . . . . . 34 Glenbrook Machinery . . . . 28 Gyrate NZ . . . . . . 35 Heli Maintenance . . . . . 20 Heli West . . . . . . 29 Heliflite . . . . . . . 46 Heliflite Charter and Training . . 36 Helispecs . . . . . . 11 HeliSupport . . . . . . 32 Hood Insurance Brokers . . . 39 ICEA Aviation . . . . . . 13 Keane Spray Nozzles . . . . 36 Liviu Avionics . . . . . . 44 Martin Aviation Services . . . 34 Massey School of Aviation . . 2, 10 Opportunities Unlimited . . . 47 OzRunways . . . . . . 6 Pattershall Oil . . . . . . 17 Plane Torque . . . . . . 36 Primary Avionics . . . . . 8 Quality Safety Management . . 11 RAANZ . . . . . . . 44 Redfort Logistics . . . . . 7 Remuera Doctors . . . . . 34 Ridge Air . . . . . . . 9 Rotor and Wing Maintenance . . 44 SAB Avionics . . . . . . 33 Soaring NZ . . . . . . 40 Solidus Industries . . . . . 31 Solo Wings . . . . . . 34 South Pacific Rotors . . . . 45 Southair . . . . . . . 3 Southern Wings . . . . . 23 SparxFly . . . . . . . 39 Spidertracks . . . . . . 20 Spratt Financial Services . . . 20 Talk Cargo . . . . . . 48 Tecnam . . . . . . . 4 Tracplus . . . . . . . 15 Waypoints Aviation . . . . 30 Westwind Aviation . . . . 39 2020 #3 KiwiFlyer Classifieds D ENNIS T HOMPSON I NTERNATIONAL L IMITED Can we be of service?
