< PreviousKiwiFlyer Magazine Issue 80 40 Aviation Meteorology New Zealand region for so long (around one week) was because it developed on the northern flank of a blocking high over New Zealand – this was an example of the blocking pair discussed above. As the blocking high was displaced east of the country by the developing depression in the Tasman Sea, so went the decaying bomb low. On the upside, east coast surfers were thrilled as a large fetch of strong easterlies associated with the slow- moving low delivered heavy, long-period easterly swell to most east coast breaks. The next low-pressure system, on the other hand, had significant impacts across New Zealand, especially the Canterbury region. On 27 May a complex trough moving across the Tasman Sea developed into a low-pressure system which then quickly cut-off. Because this system was cut-off, it became slow-moving over central New Zealand, not migrating east of the country until 1 June (see Figure 2). It brought widespread rain and strong winds, with Canterbury especially badly affected. On Friday 28 May, MetService Expert Meteorologists issued a Red Warning for heavy rain; this was only the second time a Red Warning had been issued, indicating the expected extreme nature of the event. Over the course of the weekend and into Monday, a tongue of very moist air on the eastern flank of the depression brought relentless heavy rain to the Canterbury region. Rainfall resulting from the strong ascent in the low-pressure system was enhanced, as is often the case in New Zealand, by ascent of the airstream up the eastern slopes of the Southern Alps – unsurprisingly, the heaviest rain was observed in the Canterbury High Country. ‘Return period’ is a term one sometimes hears scientists use when discussing extreme natural events. Return period is another way of expressing the probability of a certain event occurring in any given year; it is the estimated time between events of a similar magnitude. During the Red Warning storm, many of the Canterbury High Country weather stations recorded rainfall accumulations exceeding 300mm in the 48 hours from midday Saturday to midday Monday; one station recorded an extraordinary 533mm! All these stations’ accumulations had a return period of >100 years; this is equivalent to saying that there is a <1% F K chance of a similar event occurring in any given year. In addition, several stations on the Canterbury Plains recorded rainfall with return periods exceeding 50 years. A weather event with a return period greater than 50 years is considered ‘extreme’, with flooding a highly likely outcome. The impacts of the rainfall were major and widespread across Canterbury. A state of emergency was declared for the entire region, which allowed resources to be sent region-wide where required. Serious flooding occurred, with dangerous river conditions, burst banks and evacuations of some towns. There was damage to roads, causing disruption to traffic and the isolation of some communities. This included the closure of the Ashburton River/ Hakatere Bridge, the main arterial route along SH1 connecting Christchurch to South Canterbury and Otago. There was damage to many homes and farms across the region, as well as power outages. There were a couple of hairy helicopter rescues after people got into trouble near rivers. Sadly, one person was killed in North Canterbury when strong winds blew a tree onto a car. In summary, cut-off lows are the other side of the coin of blocking highs, and in fact the two weather systems sometimes occur in tandem. Like blocking highs, they are a slow-moving weather system that can set the tone of the weather for up to a week; unlike blocking highs, however, they generally bring unsettled weather. Cut-offs can bring just about all the hazards an aviator has to be mindful of – poor visibility, low cloud, icing, turbulence, and thunderstorms. It is common to hear people say that ‘weather in New Zealand changes quickly’, that conditions can deteriorate suddenly but also tend to improve quickly. Certainly, many weather systems in our region are fast-moving and inclement weather is often short-lived. Nevertheless, aviators should keep in mind that the occasional occurrence of cut-off lows disrupts this rule of thumb. Aviators should always stay up to date with the latest weather information supplied by MetService, which can be found at metflight.metra. co.nz and metjet.metra.co.nz. Richard VanGrunsven (see where the ‘RV’ comes from), of Vans aircraft designed the RV-12 to include a practical payload of 249 kg and a good sized cockpit. The RV-12iS variant with 912iS engine was introduced in 2017. It incorporated a new cowling design, quick-retracting flaps, a quick-adjusting seat, redesigned landing gear attachments and fuel tank, and more. The RV-12 is sold as six sub-kits: wings, fuselage, empennage & tail section, finishing (cowling, wiring, canopy, etc.), power plant, and avionics. Paul’s first sub-kit was delivered in October of 2020 and each subsequent kit was ordered as soon as the previous one arrived. With the help of Covid and working from home his RV-12 only took 18 months to complete. Paul said the kits were very well made and comprehensive right down to the zip ties. Pre-drilled holes lined up exactly, although he says it was a bit daunting when opening the first box to find it held 12,500 rivets! This aircraft was designed that the wings could be removed like in a glider but Paul said this isn’t an option that he will use. The cockpit includes a Dynon glass cockpit on one side and an iPad on the other which are connected together producing backup if needed. There’s also a cup holder. At present ZK-DOL is completely finished in polished aluminium. Paul plans to either paint or wrap the plane in the winter. Test flying has been done by Bill Henwood who has now completed the 10 hours of testing and found no concerns or issues and said it flew beautifully. Flying in the cruise-eco mode at 5200rpm it cruises at 105 kts using 16 lph of 95octane fuel. It stalls with flap at 40 kts so over the fence is at 60 kts and then the threshold at 55 kts to an easy landing. Paul recently completed his first solo cross country in the RV-12 and loved every minute of it. ZK-PPR Cessna 208B ZK-PPR is a brand new Cessna Grand Caravan EX and is the second of this type in the Glenorchy Air fleet. The Cessna Grand Caravan EX aircraft is known for its dependable and efficient performance by regional airlines, charter operators and cargo carriers worldwide. It was engineered for high payload, short runway work, with single-engine economy and simplicity. James Stokes, MD for Glenorchy Air says they have previously operated a fleet of GA8 Airvans which could carry 6/7 passengers. The Caravan can carry 12/13 passengers which makes their fleet significantly more efficient and sustainable. They have retained a single Airvan and continue to operate a 2019 Cessna 206 Turbo Stationair HD. ZK-PPR is custom configured so that every passenger has a window seat – an important selling point for scenic flights. At time of writing the new Caravan is in Wanaka being prepared for service. ZK-JAB Jabiru J230 UL New to NZ is this Jabiru J230, brought in by the Ormond Family Trust to be based at Hood Aerodrome in Masterton. Kevin Ormond says that they bought the aircraft second hand in Australia in 2020 (it’s a 2007 model) where he has been flying it. The Jabiru J230 is an Australian light- sport aircraft, designed and produced by Jabiru Aircraft. The all composite aircraft is supplied as a kit for amateur construction or as a complete ready-to-fly aircraft. ZK-JAB is powered by a Jabiru 3300 120 hp 6 cylinder engine and cruises at 115 kts. Stall is 48 kts at max weight of 600 kg. Kevin says it is a great utility aircraft, having recently flown right across Australia to get the aircraft to Bundaberg where it was loaded into a container. Kevin’s Australia transit was from west to east via the South Coast and crossed four states. Leaving Geraldton on 5th December, he had a smooth 3.5 hour flight before stopping in Kalgoorie for fuel. He then followed the Indian Pacific railway line affectionately known by pioneering aviators as the ‘Iron Compass’. Just over 3 hours later, Forrest Airport appeared where he landed mid-afternoon. The next day it was on to Broken Hill via Ceduna where he had to stay for a few days while waiting for the Queensland border to open. Once this happened Kevin flew from Bourke to Gympie then later to Bundaberg. “Over 4000 kms, 21 hours in the air, from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific, it was an incredible experience, and hopefully shows that we and the aircraft we fly are capable of bigger adventures than we think.” Come and see us for affordable accessible recreational aviation services NZ wide l Microlight introductory flights l Simple entry process - NZTA Class 1 medical, FPP l Microlight flight training l Online examination service l Microlight pilot certification l Microlight type ratings for Part 61 pilots (RPL, PPL) l Annual inspections l BFR, medical, membership, inspection reminders Simple, low cost aviation support by pilots, for pilots, in a club-based environment.
