< PreviousThe Royal Aeronautical Society (NZ Division) held its annual symposium at Parliament on 3rd November. The event included speakers from NZDF, RNZAF, Airways, CAA, AirNZ, Aviation NZ and numerous other asssociations, as well as from several significant New Zealand aviation companies. Paul Harrison attended and has prepared a summary of the event which we will include in the next issue of KiwiFlyer. For this issue, Paul covers the presentation of numerous awards for achievements in aviation which are always made at the conclusion of the event. As is the tradition for the annual RAeS symposium, the day ends with a dinner and the presentation of awards to a variety of groups and individuals. This year’s recipients were as follows. Kestrel Trophy The Kestrel Trophy is awarded by the Chief of Air Force to the RNZAF unit adjudged the most excellent for the previous year. The award went to the Defence Health Centre based at Whenuapai for their response to COVID-19 where they had to not only protect themselves, but were responsible for the health and safety of the NZDF’s and RNZAF’s response to the pandemic. Sir Geoffrey Roberts Award This award is open to any New Zealand citizen who has the intention of following a career in civil aviation in New Zealand. The candidate must be in training or gaining experience in civil aviation overseas. Nathan Cotton was presented with the award. Nathan is a student pilot who also works on the ramp at Whangarei airport. He has demonstrated a high degree of SMS principles while working at Whangarei, and is currently working toward a CPL and airline career. Duncan Campbell Award This award recognises excellence in aviation journalism. Jill McCaw has long been a contributor to several aviation magazines, in particular producing excellent work for KiwiFlyer and before that New Zealand Gliding. She also established Soaring NZ which received praise for its high quality of presentation and content until the final issue in 2020. Ian Diamond Award This award was established in memory of Ian James Diamond, General Manager of Engineering at AirNZ. The award is made to a young aviation professional wishing to embark on a course of higher academic study leading to a tertiary qualification in 2023 RAeS Awards an aviation related subject with the intention of participating in New Zealand aviation. The 2023 award went to CPL Samuel Cunliffe, RNZAF who is an outstanding aviation technician. He has consistently displayed the qualities of a high achiever and has excelled at full time study at the Auckland University of Technology, gaining passes with Distinction. Neville Boeing – Two Awards Donated by the Boeing Aircraft Company, this award goes to individuals who display outstanding achievement in their professional career. The first award for 2023 went to FGOFF Zhixin Cen who is a structural engineer employed within the Military Design Office. Her commitment and professional development has impressed her managers. Zhixin intends to continue her aeronautical structures-focused study into the field of Finite Element Analysis. The second award went to SGT Jonathan Baylis. Jonathan has demonstrated dedication and a work ethic that saw him rise to his current role as a maintenance certifier and supervisor. He has embarked on a goal of gaining a BEng degree primarily through remote learning. George Watt - Two Awards This RNZAF award is given to serving member(s) in recognition of outstanding technical merit which enhances the efficiency of the RNZAF. The award can be made for a variety of inventions, improvements in methods, or in methods of improving technical training. The first award this year went to SGT Bruce Sandbrook, a SNCO of the Avionics Flight at Ohakea. His achievement was to develop an NH90 Horizontal Stabiliser De-icing Kit test set. This piece of equipment saves the RNZAF significant time and money in the maintenance of this stabiliser. The Second Award went to CPL Tom Parkinson, also from Ohakea who designed, prototyped, and trialled an oil drain system to pump, filter, and rapidly replenish the gear box oil of the NH90 helicopter when deployed on operations. The new system has reduced this routine task following the illumination of a chip warning light from three hours to 10 minutes. Henry Wigram Award Honouring the name of a founding pioneer and supporter KiwiFlyer Magazine Issue 96 40 Event Report contributed by Paul Harrisonof early New Zealand aviation, the Henry Wigram Award is given for the best paper delivered to a branch of the Society or at a Symposium. The BECA Company received the award in recognition of their presentation on how New Zealand was certifying airborne software for the first time. The award was presented to the BECA Applied Technology Team, led by Brian Fernley and Jessica Tucker, and presenters Alex Altobelli and Patrick Lalor. Meritorious Service Award The RAeS(NZ) Division Meritorious Service Awards recognise individuals who have made long term outstanding contributions in all sections of aerospace in New Zealand. There were five 2023 awards, going to: 1) GPCAPT John McWilliam, who has seen a 45 year career in aviation in New Zealand. Following a 20 year RNZAF career during which he was awarded an Air Force Cross for ensuring continuation of flying training during a period of critical instructor manning, John then joined Pacific Aerospace for 10 years in roles as Chief Test Pilot, CEO, Technical Director and General Manager for their Part 145 operations. He returned to the RNZAF as an independent advisor to the CAF as the Operating Airworthiness Regulator. He has been instrumental in supporting the building of an independent NZDF Aviation Authority with the responsibility of enhancing and promoting the safety of military air operations. 2) Stephen Davies Howard, who has enjoyed a long career in the RAF, RNZAF, NZ GA and the TAIC. As well as being a strong advocate of the ‘Young Eagles’ programme within Flying NZ, he is also passionate on the preservation of historical aircraft through his professionalism and leadership while President of the Wairarapa Flying Tigers. 3) Ross Crawford, whose aviation career spans 60 years and 21,500 hours of flying. Ross flew with several NZ Aero Clubs before moving to Australia to fly in the agricultural sector as a pilot and instructor. He returned to New Zealand and was the Deputy CFI at the Wanganui Flying School. During his airline career he held several senior appointments, and achieved a BAv with credits in Human Factors and Air Safety Investigation. Ross has also run countless Instructional Techniques courses for budding instructors. 4) Robert Jon Kerr, whose service to the aeronautical industry over the past 30 years has seen him hold roles as a delegate of the NZCAA, and as Designer, Project Manager and Mentor. In 2003 he, along with Richard Andrews, started Flight Structures Limited which gained Part 146 Certification in 2023. The company is the largest independent design organisation in New Zealand. 5) Alan John Boyce, who has made a significant contribution to the New Zealand aviation community through his long serving involvement with the RAeS and Guild of Air Pilots and Navigators where he holds the position of an Associate Fellow. He is a former airline captain and has a masters degree in Aviation Management Systems and an undergraduate degree in aviation instructional design and CRM. He is also a NZCAA Flight Examiner. Paul Harrison 41 2023 #9 F KKiwiFlyer Magazine Issue 96 42 ZK-SGM ICP Savannah S Thanks to the support and encouragement of NZ ICP Agent Philip Seale of Westwind Aviation, we now have 40 Savannahs on the register. Produced in Italy by ICP srl., the Savannah is available in both kit and ready-to-fly form. The most recent to be built is a Savannah S kit by the Canterbury Recreational Aircraft Club. Doug Anderson who is the Past President explained that Graeme Main came to him 18 months ago with an idea for a club project; a Savannah kit to be built by members in the club hangar with some oversight by Doug and Ray Corbett. Doug said a lot of progress was made over the next year - most of the wings and tail feathers were completed plus a fair bit of the fuselage but as Graeme’s health deteriorated progress slowed. Sadly, Graeme passed away earlier this year and the build came to a halt. Doug and other club members felt that this project should be completed. After a meeting with the new President Iain McPhail and new committee members the aircraft was moved into Doug’s hanger with the commitment that the aircraft would be finished. Lots of hours were invested over six months and by the time this goes to print the club expects their new aircraft to be flying, when it will join the Tecnams on the club’s flight line. Doug said he really enjoyed getting this project finished and acknowledges many great people who contributed a considerable amount of time: “Ray Corbett was the main man for all major work and his skills have really made this project the definition of a great build. Wayne Wilson was there nearly every day and whizzed all around Christchurch to get whatever they needed. Alex Maurenbecker was there three times a week and helped with much of the ZK Review Profiles contributed by Penny Belworthy preparation of all the aluminium for painting - the paint job looks really good and is testament to his hard work. Stewart Bufton sorted all things complicated including most of the wiring and radio/coms - all engineering work done with great skill. Chris Pennell helped with much of the rework that needed to happen and was really keen to get this aircraft done correctly to give his good old mate Graeme Main the best send off. David Tillman helped on a variety of complicated rebuild bits or assembly of doors and other parts and Brendon Marshall worked on some of the upholstery. Peter Collins was a big help with buying headsets and anything that was required. Philip Seale, the local ICP agent put up with a lot when we claimed that parts were missing - but usually misplaced – and generally always sorted the mess out. And there were many others (members and even non-members) who came and went over the course of 18 months, helping in small and large parts to get this project over the line and now finished. We are indebted to you all.” 42 years’ experience CPL (A) ‘B’ Cat 03 477 1719 garth@garthcameronlaw.co.nz Contact David on 027 222 0872 avionicscanterbury@gmail.com www.avionicscanterbury.co.nz Pictured is the all new avionics suite we installed in Bret Lucas’ Bonanza We’re proud to say we built this panel Whether your ideas are big or small, we’ll work with you to plan everything you’d like, then implement that plan in stages to suit your budget. The Daher Kodiak (formerly Quest Kodiak) is an American utility STOL aircraft designed by and originally manufactured by Quest Aircraft. Manufacturing was taken over by Daher in 2019 after its purchase of Quest. James Stokes, MD of Glenorchy Air says this aircraft is configured with a 10 seat interior with windows for all passengers and will be used mainly on their Mt Cook and Milford Sound routes, with occasional visits to Stewart Island. He says it has incredible runway performance and cruises slightly faster than their Grand Caravan EXs on a lower fuel burn. The aircraft was imported in September with the ferry flight undertaken by professional ferry pilot John Smith. The route flown was Santa Maria California – Hilo Hawaii - Kiritimati (Christmas Island) Kiribati – Apia Samoa – Auckland – Wanaka. The aircraft was ferry tanked in Merced CA and was able to fly for approximately 16 hours on its KiwiFlyer Magazine Issue 96 44 Leaders in Helicopter Sales and Service Number One for Robinson Helicopter Sales & Service Heliflite are proud New Zealand and Australian Distributors for Robinson and Kopter Helicopters We invite you to visit our website for details of more than 20 New and Pre-owned Helicopters currently in stock throughout Australasia www.heliflite.com.au Sales (NZ): Brett Sanders 021 748 984 brett@heliflite.nz Sales (AU): Rob Bentley-Johnston +61 4 0319 6219 R.B.J@heliflite.com.au Service: Zack Erdos 021 748 608 zack@heliflite.nz Parts: Sylvia Sanders 09 299 9442 sylvia@heliflite.nz additional fuel, the longest leg being just over 12 hours from Santa Maria to Hilo. ZK-KDK with its striking white and red colour scheme has already joined operations and is powered with a 750 hp Pratt & Whitney PT6-34 Turbine Engine with a 4 blade Hartzell propeller giving it a cruise speed of 170 kts. The interior has premium leather, the latest Garmin G1000 NXI glass cockpit avionics, and a great view from every seat. This aircraft makes an ideal platform for their shorter runway operations. The engine is capable of running on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), when this becomes available. This was an important factor as they intend to be the first Queenstown- based operator to use SAF in their turbine aircraft. ZK-TDN BRM Aero Bristell LSA While on a bike tour of the Czech Republic, Nigel Forrester of Alexandra wanted to visit a few aircraft factories as about 24% of the world’s LSAs are produced there. He was very impressed with the BRM Aero Bristell factory in Kunovice as well as the quality of the product and the sheer size of the factory. The BRM Aero Bristell NG 5, now called the Bristell Classic, is supplied as a ready-to-fly microlight/LSA. Nigel was lucky to find an ex-demonstrator in Australia that had only done 125 hours. This is a taildragger version which he thinks is the only one in the Southern Hemisphere. TDN is powered with a 100 hp Rotax 912 turning an in-flight adjustable propeller for a cruise speed of 120 kts using 18 lph. The stall speed is 38 kts. Because this aircraft is lighter than the 915 tricycle version it has a much better climb rate at 1300 feet per minute. Nigel says it is an ideal cruising machine with a wider and bigger cabin than a Cessna 172 and has lots of luggage space. TDN is a modern instrument panel including autopilot; in Nigel’s words “all the bells and whistles”. Nigel is looking forward to flying this very sleek looking machine as soon as he has completed his rating.Kiwi F lyer Advertising Index page Aerofix . . . . . . . 7 AeroShell . . . . . . . 21 Air Rarotonga . . . . . . 6 AOPA . . . . . . . 17 Auto and Aero Refinishers . . . 15 Avcraft Engineering . . . . 18 Aviation & Performance Parts . . 6 Aviation Power Supply Pty . . . 12 Aviation Radio . . . . . . 26 Aviation Safety Supplies . . . 39 Avionics Canterbury Wide . . . 42 Avparts . . . . . . . 24 Avplan EFB . . . . . . 12 Bert Flood Imports . . . . . 14 Central Aero Electrical . . . . 24 Central Aero Engineering . . . 15 Classic Aero Machining Service . . 34 Dennis Thompson International . 30, 45 Ensol Fuel Tankers . . . . . 43 Fenian Retreat . . . . . . 22 Flight Club . . . . . . 31 Fly Into Accommodation NP . . . 46 Foxbat NZ . . . . . . 20 Gallagher Insurance . . . . 19 Garmin . . . . . . . 2 Garth Cameron Law . . . . 42 Gaye Pardy Travel . . . . . 28 Gliding NZ . . . . . . 23 Heliflite . . . . . . . 44 Heliflite Charter and Training . . 37 Hood Insurance Brokers . . . 38 HP Aviation Hoses . . . . . 11 Kannad . . . . . . . 26 Keane Spray Nozzles . . . . 31 Lightspeed Headsets . . . . 34 Martin Aviation Services . . . 22 Opportunities Unlimited . . . 47 OzRunways . . . . . . 9 Primary Avionics . . . . . 28 RAANZ . . . . . . . 45 Ridge Air . . . . . . . 24 Rotax Engines . . . . . . 14 Rotor and Aero Services . . . 13 Rotorcraft . . . . . . . 33 Sling Aircraft . . . . . . 34 Solidus Industries . . . . . 31 Solo Wings . . . . . . 42 Southair . . . . . . . 7 SparxFly . . . . . . . 38 Spratt Financial Services . . . 23 Stoneybrook Training . . . . 28 Superior Air Parts . . . . . 22 Talk Cargo . . . . . . 48 Tecnam . . . . . . . 5 TracPlus . . . . . . . 35 V2Track . . . . . . . 41 VMC Aviation . . . . . . 29 Warbirds Over Wanaka . . . 27 Waypoints Aviation . . . . 44 Westwind Aviation . . . . . 32 Wings and Wheels . . . . . 33 2023 #9 Classified Listings Fuel Trailer for sale Near new fuel trailer now surplus to requirements for sale. $26000 +GST.
